Subsection (a) of section 6213 requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services, within one year of enactment and after consulting one or more entities from each of the seven named categories, to issue and spread, or update, guidance on five topics: using interpreters during a telemedicine appointment, giving accessible instructions on how to reach telecommunications systems, improving access to digital patient portals, using video platforms that allow multi-person calls for interpretation, and providing patient materials and reminders in multiple languages.

What the document actually says

“Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this section, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, in consultation with 1 or more entities from each of the categories described in paragraphs (1) through (7) of subsection (b), shall issue and disseminate, or update and revise as applicable, guidance for the entities described in such subsection on the following:”

That sentence, in plain words

Within one year the health chief must put out guidance. First the chief must ask groups from each listed kind. The guidance is for those same groups.

What this is about

Care by screen is harder when patient and doctor do not share a language. Guidance is advice, not a rule. It sets out what works.

How to Read This Page

The quotation is the document's own words, exactly as printed, and we check the page number against the Act itself before publishing. The paragraph underneath is our summary, not the document's words. So is the plain English version, which is why it sits beside the quotation rather than replacing it.
