Making further consolidated appropriations for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026, and for other purposes, Sec. 5017

Subsection (a) of section 5017 requires the United States Sentencing Commission to issue the guidelines or amendments provided for under section 8605(e) of the SAFER SKIES Act as soon as possible after that Act was enacted, and no later than December 31, 2026. It sets that deadline notwithstanding the deadline in section 994(p) of title 28, United States Code.

That sentence, in plain words

A federal panel must write the sentencing rules called for by another law. It must do so as soon as it can. It must finish by December 31, 2026.

What this is about

A judge uses a set of rules to help pick a sentence. A federal panel writes those rules. Its usual clock does not apply here.

How to Read This Page

The quotation is the document's own words, exactly as printed, and we check the page number against the Act itself before publishing. The paragraph underneath is our summary, not the document's words. So is the plain English version, which is why it sits beside the quotation rather than replacing it.
