Subsection (a) of section 6501 amends section 317K(d) of the Public Health Service Act. It names obstetricians and gynecologists among the clinical specialties, changes as applicable to if available, and replaces as appropriate with a duty to coordinate with those who certify deaths to improve the collection and quality of death record reports, including by amending errors and missing or incomplete cause-of-death information on a death certificate.

Subsection (b) of section 6501 adds a new subsection (e) to section 317K of the Public Health Service Act. The Secretary, acting through the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and in consultation with the Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, must identify and spread best practices for preventing maternal illness and death, taking into account findings from other federal maternal health programs, at least once each fiscal year.
